Are Staff Offering the Add-On? Warranty, Finance, Loyalty and Accessory Attach Rate From the Conversation
Attach rate from the POS tells a retailer how often the warranty, the finance plan, the loyalty enrolment or the accessory was sold; it cannot tell whether it was offered. A store with a low warranty attach rate may have advisors who offer it badly or advisors who never mention it, and the fix is different for each. The consented sales conversation holds the attempt: whether the add-on was offered, how it was described, what the customer said back. This guide sets out the two rates (offer and acceptance), how to measure them from the conversation, the pattern most networks find, and the coaching that moves them, for electronics, mobile, automobile and furniture retail.
Two rates, not one
The pattern most networks find on first measurement: the attach rate is low because the offer rate is low, not because customers refuse. Advisors skip the add-on at the busiest hour, after a long sale, or because they are not sure of its price. Acceptance, when the offer is made properly, is usually far higher than the attach rate implies.
| Rate | Definition | Source | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offer rate | Conversations in which the add-on was mentioned, over eligible conversations | The consented conversation | Whether the floor is trying |
| Acceptance rate | Add-ons sold, over conversations in which it was offered | The conversation joined to the POS | Whether the offer is made well, and whether the add-on is priced right |
| Attach rate | Add-ons sold, over eligible bills | The POS alone | The result, with no explanation |
Measuring it from the conversation
The wider metric set and the baseline plan are at /learn/how-to-measure-in-store-sales-interactions/. The track-the-close guide covers the ask at the end of the sale in the same way, at /learn/how-to-track-every-close-in-a-retail-store/.
- Define each add-on and what counts as an offer: the warranty named with its price; the EMI quoted with the tenure; the loyalty programme explained with its benefit; the accessory shown, not listed.
- Capture consented conversations on the advisor's phone; score each eligible conversation for offer made, how described, customer response.
- Join to the POS by store and time for acceptance; report offer rate and acceptance rate per advisor, store and product.
- Coach the offer rate first, with the store's own best offer line in its own language; then the description, with the acceptance rate as the proof.
By format
- Electronics and appliances: extended warranty and installation; the offer most often skipped after a long demonstration.
- Mobile and telecom: the plan upgrade, the accessory bundle, the protection plan; the attempt rate halves at peak hour.
- Automobile: finance on the floor, exchange, accessories and extended warranty; the finance desk compliance side is at /learn/dealership-finance-and-insurance-conversation-compliance/.
- Furniture: fabric protection, delivery and assembly, the matching piece; the offer rarely made before the price objection.
On the floor
An electronics chain's warranty attach rate is flat across stores. The conversations show the offer rate ranging from near zero to most conversations by advisor, and acceptance above half wherever the warranty is named with its price before billing. The coaching note is a single line per store; the attach rate moves within a month and the warranty price does not change.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if staff are offering the extended warranty?
Only from the conversation. The POS shows the warranty sold; the consented conversation shows it offered, how it was described and what the customer said. Measure the offer rate and the acceptance rate separately; most low attach rates are low offer rates.
What is a good attach rate?
It varies by product and price. The useful comparison is the offer rate between your own stores and the acceptance rate when the offer is made properly; both are visible from the conversation and both move with coaching.
Does this apply to loyalty enrolment?
Yes. Enrolment rate is an attach rate; whether the programme was explained with its benefit is an offer rate, and the gap between the two is the coaching opportunity.
