Guided Selling vs Conversation Intelligence: Scripting the Sale vs Seeing It

Guided selling software leads a customer to a product through a scripted flow of questions on a tablet, a kiosk or the advisor's device; conversation intelligence captures the conversation the advisor actually had with the customer and scores it against the playbook. One scripts the sale in advance; the other sees it after. Buyers confuse them because both promise consistent selling, and vendors of each will say they do the other. This page sets out what each is for, where they conflict on an assisted-retail floor, where they combine, and how to choose.

What each is for

Guided sellingConversation intelligence
What it doesAsks the customer or the advisor a sequence of questions and recommends a product or configurationCaptures the advisor-customer conversation with consent, transcribes and scores it against the playbook
Where it livesA tablet, a kiosk, a web configurator, the advisor's appThe advisor's phone, running in the background of a natural conversation
StrengthConsistency in complex configuration (kitchens, PCs, insurance plans, mattresses)Visibility of what was actually said, coaching, follow-up, a score per store
WeaknessCustomers in assisted retail do not want a questionnaire; advisors route around itDepends on the advisor tapping record; coverage must be watched
Typical vendorsConfigure-price-quote and product-finder tools; retail clienteling suites with guided flowsBorentis, tolqAI, Cognifyze, Rilla, InStore.ai

Where they conflict

On an assisted-retail floor (automobile, jewellery, durables, telecom) the customer came to talk to a person, in Hinglish, about a need they have not fully formed. A tablet questionnaire between them and the advisor lowers engagement, and the advisors know it, so the guided flow is skipped at the busiest hour and the dashboard shows adoption falling. Conversation intelligence asks nothing of the customer and nothing of the advisor beyond a tap and a sentence, and shows whether the need questions were asked in the advisor's own words.

Where they combine

The category is defined at /learn/what-is-retail-conversation-intelligence/. How to measure the conversation the guided flow was meant to script is at /learn/how-to-measure-in-store-sales-interactions/.

  • Complex configuration: a kitchen, a solar system, an insurance plan. The guided tool configures; conversation intelligence shows whether the advisor explained the configuration and the price.
  • The playbook itself: the questions a guided flow would ask are the need-discovery step of the playbook; conversation intelligence scores whether they were asked naturally.
  • Training: a guided flow teaches new advisors the questions; conversation intelligence shows when they no longer need the tablet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between guided selling and conversation intelligence?

Guided selling scripts the sale in advance through a question flow on a device; conversation intelligence captures the conversation that actually happened and scores it. One is a tool the customer or advisor uses; the other observes the advisor's own conversation with consent.

Which does an assisted-retail store need?

Conversation intelligence first, because the customer came to talk to a person and the question is whether that person sold to the playbook. Guided selling helps where configuration is genuinely complex.

Can conversation intelligence coach in real time like a guided flow?

Some tools nudge in real time; most score after the conversation and coach from the store's best examples. The trade-off is at /learn/real-time-coaching-vs-after-the-fact-scoring/.
