What Is In-Store Intelligence? Shop Floor, Showroom and Counter Intelligence Explained

In-store intelligence is everything a retailer can learn about what happens inside a physical store between a customer walking in and walking out: who came in and when, what was said between customer and staff, what the store looked like, and what was sold. The phrase is used loosely, and so are its cousins: shop floor intelligence, showroom intelligence, store intelligence software, customer interaction intelligence, sales floor analytics. They all point at the same gap, which is that a website visit produces dozens of recorded events and a store visit produces one, the bill. This page sorts the terms, names the four sources the intelligence comes from, and says what to start with for your kind of store.

The four sources in-store intelligence is built from

SourceWhat it tells youTypical toolsWhat it cannot tell you
The bill (POS)What sold, when, to whom if there is a loyalty numberBilling software, loyalty programmesAnything about the customers who did not buy
The door and the cameraHow many came in, where they went, how long they stayed, whether staff approachedFootfall counters, CCTV analyticsWhat anyone said; why the customer left
The store itselfWhether the display, the stock and the routines matched the standardStore operations and audit apps with photo proofWhether the staff sold well in front of the good display
The conversationWhat the customer wanted, what was said, what they objected to, whether the staff asked for the saleConversation intelligence for the shop floorWhat happened before the greeting; joining the camera's view to the conversation is on the Borentis roadmap

Shop floor intelligence, showroom intelligence, counter intelligence: the same thing by format

The adjective tells you the format, not the method. Shop floor intelligence is the apparel and footwear phrasing, where customers browse and may be helped. Showroom intelligence is the automobile, jewellery, furniture and appliance phrasing, where a consultation of ten to forty minutes decides a large purchase. Counter intelligence is the mobile, pharmacy and modern-trade phrasing, where a brand's promoter pitches against the neighbouring brand at someone else's counter. All three need the four sources above; what differs is which source matters most. A showroom lives on the conversation. A fashion floor lives on coverage and the display. A counter lives on what the promoter said and what the rival promoter said back.

Store intelligence software: what people mean when they search for it

Buyers who type store intelligence software are usually looking for one of three products and do not yet know which. Retail analytics dashboards join the bill to footfall and tell you conversion by store and hour. Store operations platforms check the store against its standard with photo proof, tickets and checklists. Conversation intelligence captures and scores what was said. The first two are mature categories; the third is the newest and the one that explains the other two, because conversion is decided in the conversation. The retail analytics branches are at /learn/retail-analytics-guide/; store operations is at /learn/store-operations-software-for-retail-chains-india/; the conversation category is defined at /learn/what-is-retail-conversation-intelligence/.

Customer interaction intelligence and sales floor analytics

Customer interaction intelligence is the phrase for the conversation source on its own: every interaction between a customer and a member of staff, captured with consent, transcribed and scored. Sales floor analytics is the broader phrase for the numbers that come out of all four sources once they are joined: walk-ins to interactions to bills, by store, by hour, by salesperson, with the reasons underneath. The metrics are at /learn/how-to-measure-in-store-sales-interactions/, and what the conversation adds to the customer's profile is at /learn/what-is-shopper-intelligence/.

What to start with, by kind of store

Kind of storeStart withThen addBecause
Showroom (cars, two-wheelers, jewellery, furniture, appliances)The conversationFootfall by hourA long consultation decides the sale; the conversation is where it is won or lost
Fashion and footwear floorCoverage and the display (footfall plus store operations)The conversation at the trial room and the counterMost visits are browse-assist; coverage decides whether a conversation happens at all
Mobile and electronics counterThe conversation, especially the scheme and the attachStore operations for the displayShort conversations, high volume; the wrong scheme quoted is the commonest loss
Brand promoters in multi-brand storesThe promoter's conversationDisplay audits by photoThe brand cannot see its own counter any other way

Store staff performance tracking app: what it can and cannot tell you

Owners also search for a store staff performance tracking app, and the phrase covers three different things. A field-sales tracking app follows salespeople who travel, by GPS and visit logs; it is the wrong tool for staff who stand in a store. A store operations app tracks whether staff did their routines, by checklist and photo. A conversation intelligence app tracks how staff sold, by the steps in each conversation. For store staff, the second and third together answer the question; the first does not apply. How to judge staff from the conversation is at /learn/how-to-check-if-sales-staff-are-selling-properly/.

Frequently asked questions

What is in-store intelligence?

Everything a retailer can learn about what happens inside a physical store between a customer walking in and walking out: who came in (footfall and camera), what was said (the conversation), what the store looked like (operations and audits), and what sold (the bill). The phrase covers all four sources; most tools cover one.

What is the difference between in-store intelligence and retail analytics?

Retail analytics is usually the numbers from the bill and the footfall counter, joined. In-store intelligence adds the two sources those numbers cannot see: what the store looked like and what was said. The conversation is the source that explains why conversion is what it is.

What is shop floor intelligence or showroom intelligence?

The same idea named by store format. Shop floor is the apparel and footwear phrasing; showroom is the automobile, jewellery, furniture and appliance phrasing; counter is the mobile, pharmacy and brand-promoter phrasing. A showroom lives on the conversation; a fashion floor on coverage and display; a counter on what the promoter said.

What is store intelligence software?

Three different products share the name: retail analytics dashboards (bill plus footfall), store operations platforms (checklists, photo audits, tickets) and conversation intelligence (what was said, scored). Buyers usually need the conversation product to explain what the other two report.

What is a store staff performance tracking app?

For staff who stand in a store, it is a store operations app (did they do the routines, by photo) plus a conversation intelligence app (how did they sell, by the steps in each conversation). Field-sales GPS tracking apps are for travelling salespeople and do not apply.

Can CCTV give in-store intelligence on its own?

It gives the footfall, path and approach part. It cannot hear, so it cannot give the conversation part, which is where the reasons are. Joining the camera's view to the conversation is on the Borentis roadmap; the conversation is the shipped part.
