Conversation intelligence

What Is Face-to-Face Conversation Intelligence? Definition, How It Works, Where It Is Used

Face-to-face conversation intelligence is software that captures a conversation between two people in the same room, with consent, transcribes it in the language it was spoken and scores it against a standard the organisation wrote down. The two people are usually a seller and a buyer: an advisor and a walk-in in a store, a bank officer and a customer at a desk, a counsellor and a parent, a rep and a dealer. It is the branch of conversation intelligence that had to solve capture before analysis, because no platform carries the audio of a conversation across a counter. This page defines it, explains how capture works, lists where it is used and sets out what it needs.

How it works

  1. Capture. The advisor's phone with one tap and a spoken consent line, a wearable microphone, or a fixed sensor in the space. The phone needs no hardware and gives explicit consent; the sensor needs signage and captures everyone in range. The four paths are compared at /learn/how-to-capture-sales-interactions-at-retail-stores/.
  2. Transcription in the language spoken, including code-switched speech such as Hinglish, with the noise of a real floor.
  3. Scoring against the playbook: the named moments of the conversation (greet, need, demonstrate, offer, objection, close) with a transcript line behind each score.
  4. Deletion of the audio once the transcript exists; the transcript under access control.
  5. The loop: a coaching note from the store's best conversations, a lead with a brief when a customer leaves without buying, a score on one card per store or branch.

How it differs from call conversation intelligence

Call conversation intelligence (Gong, Observe.AI, Convin and peers) scores audio the platform already has, in one language, in clean conditions, for talk ratio, next steps and deal risk. Face-to-face conversation intelligence has to capture first, in noise, offline, in mixed languages, with a person asking for consent, and scores the moments of an in-person sale. The line-by-line comparison for stores is at /learn/conversation-intelligence-for-physical-retail-stores/. Retail is the largest setting for it, and the retail category is defined at /learn/what-is-retail-conversation-intelligence/.

What it needs

A stated purpose, notice before capture, a way to decline and data minimisation, under the DPDP Act. In practice a notice at the entrance and the counter, a spoken line from the advisor, audio deleted after transcription and transcripts under access control. The position in full is at /learn/is-recording-customers-legal-in-india-retail/. Borentis Floor is built on the phone-capture path for store floors; the vendors on every path are mapped at /learn/in-store-conversation-intelligence-vendors-map/.

Frequently asked questions

What is face-to-face conversation intelligence?

Software that captures an in-person conversation between a seller and a buyer with consent, transcribes it in the language spoken and scores it against a playbook, then feeds coaching, follow-up and a score per store or branch. It differs from call conversation intelligence in having to capture the audio itself, on a phone, a wearable or a sensor.

Is it the same as retail conversation intelligence?

Retail conversation intelligence is face-to-face conversation intelligence applied to stores and showrooms, which is its largest setting. The same software serves branches, clinics and the field with a different playbook.

Is it legal?

Yes, with consent and a stated purpose under the DPDP Act; in Europe under GDPR with notice and a lawful basis. Phone capture with a spoken consent line is the strongest footing in both.
