Sales Conversation Recording App for Shops and Showrooms: What It Must Do
A sales conversation recording app for a shop or showroom records the conversation between your salesperson and a walk-in customer on the salesperson's own phone, with the customer's knowledge, and then does the part a voice recorder cannot: it turns the recording into a transcript, scores it against your sales steps, groups what customers objected to, drafts the follow-up for the customer who left, and deletes the audio. Owners usually start by asking "can I just use a voice recorder", and the answer is that you can, but you will then have four hundred hours of audio a month that nobody listens to. This page lists what the app must do, what a plain recorder cannot, and the legal position.
Can I just use a voice recorder?
You can record, lawfully, with notice and consent. The problem is what happens next. A showroom with four salespeople produces a working range of two hundred to six hundred conversations a month, several hundred hours of audio. Nobody will listen to it. A recorder with no transcript, no scoring and no search is a hard drive full of good intentions. The app's job is not recording; recording is one tap. The job is everything after the tap.
What the app must do, in order
| Step | What must happen | Why it matters in a shop |
|---|---|---|
| Consent | Notice at the door and counter; the salesperson says one line; a consent marker is stored with the recording | Lawful under the DPDP Act; customers can decline and get the same service |
| Record on the salesperson's phone | One tap; no lanyard device, no counter microphone, nothing to charge | Staff will not use anything that is a second device |
| Work without signal | Audio saved on the phone in chunks and uploaded when there is a connection | Basements, back corners and 7 pm on Saturday have no signal; those are the conversations you want |
| Transcribe mixed language | Hindi, English and Hinglish in the same sentence, with the two speakers kept apart | Real store conversations switch language mid-sentence |
| Score against your steps | Each of your sales steps marked done or not, with the sentence that proves it | A score without its sentence is an opinion |
| Group what customers said | Objections, competitor names, products asked for, by store and week | This is the market report nobody else can give you |
| Draft the follow-up | A message for the customer who left, from what they asked for; a person edits and sends it | The reason follow-ups never happen is that nobody remembers what to say |
| Delete the audio | Audio removed once the transcript exists; transcript kept for a stated period | Privacy, storage and the promise on the notice |
Record customer conversations on a phone: the practical questions
- Whose phone? The salesperson's own, or a store handset. Either works; the app must not depend on the phone's clock or storage being reliable.
- Battery: a day of recording on a modern phone is fine if the app records locally and uploads in bursts. An app that streams continuously will die by lunchtime.
- Noise: showrooms are loud. The app should keep the two speakers apart and report an honest accuracy per language rather than promise perfection.
- Where the recording happens: the sales floor only. Trial rooms, washrooms and the service bay are off limits, and the app should make that easy to respect.
- Who can hear it: nobody, live. Transcripts and scores are read; audio is deleted.
Is it legal to record conversations in my shop?
In India, yes, with notice and consent under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act: a notice at the entrance and the counter saying that sales conversations are recorded to improve service, what is kept and for how long, a spoken line before recording, recording limited to the sales floor, and a way for a customer to decline without losing anything. Staff are told in writing. The template notice is at /learn/dpdp-consent-notice-retail-store-template/ and the full position, including what to do about a customer who objects later, is at /learn/is-recording-customers-legal-in-india-retail/. Other countries have different rules, from one-party consent to strict two-party consent; the country table is at /learn/recording-customers-in-stores-consent-law-by-country/.
Recorder, call-recording app, or conversation intelligence?
| Option | Records | Transcribes and scores | Follow-up | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone voice recorder | Yes | No | No | A one-off check, not a system |
| Call-recording or meeting-recorder app | Phone calls and online meetings | Often, in English, for calls | Sometimes | Telesales and remote teams; not a noisy showroom floor |
| Conversation intelligence built for the shop floor | Face-to-face, offline-first, with consent | Yes, mixed language, against your steps | Drafted for a person to send | Shops and showrooms with walk-in customers |
How Borentis does it
Borentis records on the salesperson's phone with one tap after the consent line, offline-first, transcribes Hindi, English and Hinglish, scores each conversation against the retailer's own steps with the line behind each score, groups objections and competitor mentions across stores, drafts the follow-up for a person to send, and deletes the audio after transcription. Camera analysis joined to the conversation is on the roadmap. Frequently asked questions
Can I use a voice recorder to record my sales staff with customers?
Lawfully, yes, with notice and consent. Practically, a recorder gives you hundreds of hours of audio a month that nobody listens to. The value is in the transcript, the scoring against your sales steps and the follow-up draft, which is what a conversation recording app adds.
What should a sales conversation recording app do?
Take consent, record on the salesperson's phone with one tap, keep working without signal, transcribe Hindi, English and Hinglish with speakers kept apart, score each conversation against your sales steps with the proving sentence, group objections and competitor mentions, draft the follow-up for a person to send, and delete the audio after transcription.
Can I record customer conversations on a phone in my shop?
Yes. The salesperson's own phone or a store handset works, provided the app records locally, uploads in bursts to save battery, keeps recording to the sales floor, and the notice and consent line are in place.
Is it legal to record conversations in my shop in India?
Yes, under the DPDP Act, with a notice at the entrance and counter, a spoken line before recording, recording limited to the sales floor, a stated retention period, deletion of audio after transcription and the right for a customer to decline.
Will a call-recording app work on the shop floor?
Usually not well. Call recorders are built for phone calls and online meetings in one language. A showroom conversation is face to face, noisy, mixed-language and often without signal, which is what conversation intelligence for the shop floor is built for.
